Food Goodies

Part 1  |  Part 2  Part 3

I end my posts about my visit to the Evergreen Brick Works with a panoramic shot I took while up at one of their view points. This is just one of the reasons as to why Autumn is my favourite season!

After our little outdoor adventure, my family and I along with Rich headed over to Samosa King, in Scarborough where we purchased 30 samosas (they freeze and reheat amazing! Check out my Samosa Overload post.) as well as a vegetarian curry along with a few pieces of their fresh roti (40¢ a piece) and then headed over to Datta Food where we tried their $2 Sunday special, which was a dish I wasn't quite familiar with. There was potato, maybe pieces of roti, chopped vegetables and chilies. It was pretty good, a little salty but for $2 one can't really complain! It was incredibly filling. Along with our mystery dish, we ordered a patty, which was filled with curry. Delish. That was lunch. Inexpensive and tasty!

I don't have any photos of the food, because I was too busy scarfing it down. Figures. :)

Yao ja gwai, also known as a Chinese fried “donut" sticks. They are light, airy and savory!

What better way to end the day than to take a stroll around a ginormous Asian grocery store? We stopped by T&T Supermarket to get goodies.

One person preps the dough and the other fries them. Yum!

As my mother and I walked along the freezer isle, we spot this.

What is THIS, you ask?

Candied hawthorn!
Candied hawthorn is also know as Tanghulu. It's a fruit, which has simply been dipped in caramelized sugar. It's a popular street food and snack in parts of China and vendors usually make them the day of. We don't have these vendors here in Toronto, so we got ours frozen. That meant that the sugar wasn't crunchy but rather gooey as it thawed. Dispite the sticky mess, IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS I'VE EVER HAD! I loved that it was cold, a little tart and sugary. I could have eaten many of these. Many. So dangerously delicious.

Next to the grocery store, is a Vietnamese sandwich (bánh mì) store. It was busy and crowded and for good reason too. These sandwiches are a mouthful of flavour! We didn't get any sandwiches, but we did get...

Ladies making Viet subs to order
We bought a package of Vietnamese rice cakes!
...Vietnamese rice cakes! The green is pandan flavour and the white is coconut. I remember when I was a little kid, I'd always prod at these funny looking packages of mush at the check out whilst shopping with mum. I remember how I'd always pick the package up to smell it, because it smelt of vanilla, coconut and sweetness! It was divine. We never bought a pack though, but this time, we did. I took my first bite into it imagining for it to taste a little bit like heaven, but alas it did not. I had really, really high expectations. After all, I've been waiting for this moment for nearly 20 years. Verdict?

It was...okaaaaaay. I would have liked it to taste more like it smelt. It wasn't very strong in flavour and I wanted it to be sweeter. It's still super cute to look at though and I'm glad I tried it. Now I know not to buy it. Haha.

Perhaps my parents had the same expectations and experience as I did, thus the reason as to why they never bought it for me. My little 5 year old little self probably would have turned up my nose and it would have been a waste of money.

At least this time, I choked the entire thing down. :)
