I've never grown a fruit tree before, but I've always wanted to.
The other day while roaming around Home Depot, I decided to check out their garden center. Right in the middle of the room, was a display stand full of lemon trees! I got kind of really excited. There were Meyer lemons, eureka lemons and these girlie variegated pink eureka lemon trees with the prettiest green/cream coloured leaves and purple buds which promised pink lemons.
I was sure that one was coming home with me, but needed reassurance. It was a little intimedating, so I asked some of the ladies working in the garden center about proper care, over wintering and feeding. They patiently addressed my questions and concerns and then mentioned that there was a one-year warranty. Music to my ears. If anything happens to the tree within the year, I can return or exchange it as long as there's a receipt.
SOLD! I paid thirty some odd dollars minutes later and skipped happily out of the store, lemon in tow, happy as could be!
Sir Laurence Lemon, I've named it.
Laurie for short.
The tree has lots of buds and a couple of blooms along with a few little tiny baby lemons!
The lemons will grow to have variegated stripes on their skin in yellow and green. Once ripe, it'll mostly be yellow on the outside. The inside, however will be pink in colour. Much like pink lemonade. Cool, huh?
The flowers smell smell amazing as do the leaves when they're gently rubbed. I'm keeping it an primarily indoor plant, in a pot, so that once winter comes I won't have to deal with gross bugs in the soil and what not. I've got it in the mud room, where it gets sunlight and decent amount of humidity, so hopefully Laurie won't die on me before I get my first lemon!
