Lazing with Tank

Petite Mishka decided she wanted to lounge and be lazy with me (or is it viceversa?) this morning. I had my camera and she lumped on the couch happily. She even cleaned my blanket!

Good Foam

I've been enjoying at home lattés ever since I was gifted a pre-loved espresso machine. It isn't pressurized, so I'm not rewarded with luscious crema but if you know me, you'll know that I've worked as a barista for more than a handful of years. I can tell you with confidence that I make really good micro foam.

Once Upon a Dream

I'm quite excited to watch Maleficent, which comes out in theaters at the end of May! Lana Del Rey's rendition of Once Upon a Dream is perfectly creepy and beautiful; very different from the song in the original 1959 Sleepy Beauty. Enjoy!

Chinese New Year, 2 of 3

So long to the year of the Snake! With 2014 being the year of the Horse, my mum cooked up a huge fest yesterday and the next evening, we enjoyed a delicious dinner at Crown Jewel (formerly Sam Woo Seafood Restaurant) my grandmother's preferred restaurant. The staff are always attentive and friendly and the restaurant being newly renovated, is decorated with gorgeous over sized framed wall art and pretty chandeliers. This place has a nice atmosphere- I wish I had remembered to take photos to show you! But honestly, I just wanted to get some good shots of the food and dig in.

As we sat down and got comfortable, we were served hot tea. There were two choices, but I just let the waitress pour from the pot she was holding. I love tea, so it didn't matter.
As the rest of the guests arrived and settled down, our first course of Roast Suckling Pig was presented, plated and served. Crispy, caramelized, crackling skin, combined with delicious spices and meat with a good amount of fat. I had mine with a sprinkling of sugar and a smidgen of hoisin sauce.
Fresh out of the fryer, were piping hot Seafood Meat Balls made with crab meat and shrimp that have been molded around a crab claw, breaded and send into a vat of oil. The entire thing was about the size of a small lemon! I enjoyed it with spicy mustard and a good splash of vinegar, which cut the greasiness a little. It was filling, but as you can safely assume, I polished the entire thing off in about 2 minutes.

Homemade Apple Sauce with Granny Smiths

Having never made apple sauce from scratch and refusing to pay $5 a jar for the organic kind, I finally decided it was time. Especially when I was given the opportunity to buy bags full at a sweet, sweet price of 42¢ a kilogram!

The process is nothing fancy, nothing difficult or complicated.
Wash and peel apples, rough chop, add to pot and fill three-quarters of the way up with filtered water. Boil and then simmer covered until it all turns mushy, adding water and stirring as needed. Add sweetener of choice or none at all and then cool. Blend until smooth and eat!

Plus, if you've got one of those cool spinning apple peeler/corers then you've got no excuse to not make apple sauce at home. :)

Tank showed interest until her third sniff. Then she ran away.
More for me! The apple sauce was very good. It was a little tart, with just the right amount of sweetness. I loved the silky smooth consistency and it was even better with a couple drops of vanilla.

Incased in Ice

The pool
Toronto's ice storm was intense. Rich and I (along with the entire city) had no idea just how bad it was going to be. Heck, we were driving around town at 3am shopping at stores that were open twenty-four hours the night it all started, because the house was blacked out and we were bored! Sure the freezing rain was coming down hard and the trees were already glistening with ice...I just marveled at how pretty it all was, as the street lights reflected off the branches. That is, until there were no street lights and everything was dark except for the head lights of the car.

In the morning, we saw that the was now an ice rink, littered with shattered limbs of his neighbor's fallen trees. This is what it looks like in the summer.

Back for the New Year

Holy moley. It's been awhile hasn't it?

Christmas, along with the crazy ice storm happened and passed then it was time to celebrate the coming of 2014 and now here we are. I'm totally embracing the below forty/thirty/twenty etc. temperatures right now here in Toronto; in the comfort of my heated house. Ha! Guys, I have been in hibernation mode. Lots of naps and good food and plush blankets.
#CATLYFE.

Here's to the first post of the year and to many, many more! Happy blogging everyone!

P.S. First attempt at snowflake pictures. Neat, eh?
