I spent it having family dinner with my grandmother and made Rich's mom a little bouquet of paper poppies, a lemon poppy seed bundt cake and a card. I've been feeling crafty.
I was inspired by the paper flowers on Pinterest and Martha Stewart, so made these on a whim using tissue paper in white, pink, green, black and yellow. I wanted some dimension, so with a little food colouring and water, painted messily on the paper to create some interest.
There's something nostalgic about crafting for Mother's Day. Probably because as a child I made tissue paper covered vases, painted macaroni necklaces and other nic-naks as gifts. Well, this version is a little more grown up and I think it looks really cute! All you need is tissue/crepe paper, wire (for the stem), tape or hot glue. Tutorials are all over the internet, so I'll let you choose which one to follow if you're wondering how to.
I loosely followed this tutorial from Lia Griffith.
Here's the lemon poppy seed cake- it's dairy free, egg free (vegan) and is topped with a thick lemon vanilla glaze and fresh berries. Perfect for the warmer weather, and sunny afternoons with a cup of tea. I wish I had taken a real picture of it along with the card. It looks better in real life, I swear!
Oh! My first marigold bloomed. It's super small, but that's probably because they're still in their paper/plastic cups and trays. With it being so rainy, I think it's time to give them a more permanent home. The wild cat nip that's growing on the side of the house, is growing out of control and the kitties are loving it. :)
