Pani Puri |
Vegetable Pakoras, Chicken Madras, Goat Curry and Mattar Paneer |
It was Rich's birthday this past weekend and we headed out to Bombay Buffet for copious amounts of Indian food.
Vegetable Jalfrezi, Channa Masala |
With only one of us being vegan, Indian buffets provides us with variety. We like trying different dishes, so this is perfect. On this particular night, Rich was able to choose from four kinds of stir fries and curries along with two different kinds of rice.
Naan (buttered and without) |
We like that this restaurant uses vegetable oil instead of ghee (clarified butter) in their vegetarian dishes. They were also very accommodating with our request for butter-less naan bread and offered to have them made fresh from the tandoori oven. I wanted mine with butter and was going to take from the buffet, but our server offered to have them made.
There's is nothing, nooooothing in the world like just fired naan bread. It's super hot, super fluffy and pillow-y with crispy pockets all around. Yum.

Aloo Palak, Butter Chicken, Basmati Rice with Daal Makhani |
I tried a little bit of everything. The food was delicious, but unfortunately, the butter chicken was a bit of a miss for me as I felt like it was missing spice and cream. It was almost tomato soup-y.
Goat Curry, Chicken ______ and Mattar Paneer with Riata (yogurt) |
My favourite however, was the goat curry. It was meaty with robust and rich flavours and a thick and luscious gravy.
Gulab Jamun |
Dessert consisted of Galab Jamun, something I didn't like before but love now. I prefer to eat them cold, so I plan a little a head of time and scoop them up early so they cool down. They're spongy little donuts that have been drenched in syrup. Super indulgent.
Kheer and Gajar Halwa Mithai |
I also tried Kheer (rice vermicelli pudding) and a carrot cake. The pudding had the mouth feel of slim and the little bits of noodles took a little getting use to. It also tasted strongly of cow's milk which I'm not a fan of. I like rice puddings made with coconut milk. The cake was interesting; it was dense, a little gritty, sweet and dusted with dessicated coconut. It didn't really taste like carrots to me. Nothing I'd order in particular, but I'd try them both again.
Ice Cream |
There was also a small freezer full of tubs of ice cream and I couldn't leave without having a little. I tried the mango and banana, the latter being my favourite because it tasted fake. Rich wasn't able to eat any of the desserts and they didn't have a fruit platter, but there was birthday cake to be had once we got home!
All in all, we had a good time and left feeling like we ate way too much...'cause we did. The restaurant itself is quite small and the staff while attentive are a little unenthusiastic and tend to mumble. One good thing is that they kept our glasses filled, which came in handy as I had a bit of a coughing/semi-choking episode after chewing on a chunk of super spicy chili pepper. I almost made a scene, but thankfully a glass of water and a mouthful of buttery naan prevented that.
We'll return sooner than later- maybe even for my birthday in a couple of weeks!
